Speaking, societies and teaching
Peer-facing standing is the kind the rules largely leave alone, because it is earned in front of people who can assess it. It is also the only route to the recognition most consultants actually want, and the slowest.
The prohibitions are about soliciting patients, not about standing among colleagues
Regulation 6.1.1 prohibits soliciting patients and making yourself the subject of publicity. A conference platform, a society office, a journal review panel and a teaching appointment are none of those things. They are assessed by peers, recorded as fact, and carry no patient-facing claim.
There is also one express permission worth knowing about.
Industry may not fund travel or hospitality for a healthcare professional — unless the professional is a speaker at the event.
Uniform Code of Pharmaceutical Marketing Practices 2024, as summarised in the National Medical Journal of IndiaUCPMP 2024 otherwise prohibits gifts for the personal benefit of a professional or their family, cash or monetary grants, and paid travel and hospitality. Speaking is the exception. Which means the legitimate route to a funded conference is to have something to say at it.
We do not buy you an award, and you should ask who funded the last one
| Route | Status |
|---|---|
| Society office, committee or working group, obtained by election or appointment | Legitimate. Recorded as fact. We help you pursue it |
| Conference platform, obtained by submitting an abstract that is accepted | Legitimate. Speaker status also unlocks the UCPMP travel exception |
| Journal peer review, editorial board, guideline working group | Legitimate and the most undervalued of the four |
| Teaching appointment, examinership, fellowship supervision | Legitimate and durable |
| An award with a fee, a ‘nomination charge’, or a sponsor who sells to you | We will not pursue it, and if you display it in advertising it must be independently verifiable |
| A paid ‘Top 10 Doctors’ listing or ranked directory placement | Prohibited. Platforms are barred from offering paid ranking of doctors |
The NMC guidelines of 6 October 2026 require any award or ranking used in advertising to be independently verifiable. Separately, ASCI’s guidelines on awards and rankings, dated 21 April 2022, require that an advertised healthcare, hospital or treatment award disclose its published evaluation parameters, the weightings given to each, and — where patient or public perception was an input — the independent study behind it.
Neither prohibits the award. Both ask it to show its workings. An award with a sponsor and no published methodology cannot answer either one, which is why we ask who funded it before it goes anywhere near your advertising.
Nominations are made through the Government of India’s own process and cannot be bought, brokered or accelerated by a marketing firm. Anyone offering to is selling you something they do not have. For what it is worth, measured Indian search demand for padma shri nomination and padma awards nomination process is zero — Ahrefs, India, 22 October 2026. The interest is real; the search is not where it happens.

- Pay for an award, a nomination, a shield or a plaque
- Pay for a ranked listing or directory position
- Accept industry funding for travel where you are not speaking
- Present a sponsored distinction as independent recognition
- Describe any of it in terms that invite patients rather than inform peers
The slow route is the only one that survives a verifiability test.
We will map the societies, meetings and panels in your specialty, tell you which are realistic this year, and help you prepare what you submit.
